We have been using the whole sale or dual price module for a while and it works well, however this months is our birthday month and we’re offering some specials that are lower then our wholesale prices. So I would like the wholesale price to be the lower the of the wholesale and the special if one exists.

We have been thinking about having a customer referral system for a while and now one of our tradie’s said that he would often refer to us if he had a way of doing so. Ok so what I’m thinking is a very simple system that:

1. A special link is given to each customer that they can give to friends etc
2. When a visitor arrives using above link the system will insert the coupon code: REFERRAL
3. Record referrals made by a customer
4. For Xmas we will tally up referrals per customer and send customers who have referrals a David Jones voucher or similar.

We’ve now introduced a coupon code SAVETHURSDAY, giving 10% off on Thursdays only. We control this via a cron job, see details here.

Now what we need to do is have a message displayed at the end of the cart, eg “Cheap Thursday – checkout today and receive 10% off. Enter coupon code SAVETHURSDAY during checkout to receive your discount!”

Solution:

1. Download the archive wsz_cart_display.zip and unzip it
2. open wsz_cart_defines.php and enter the coupon code you’re using and the message you want to show
3. Upload wsz_cart_defines.php to your webserver zc-root/includes/extra_datafiles
4. Edit the file ZC-root/includes/templates/your-template/templates/tpl_shopping_cart_default.php as per instructions in the file edit_cart_instructions.txt
5. Test

We have been using Fast and Easy Checkout (FEC) for a few weeks now and it works really well! One small issue we found today is that in ZC admin we can’t see who has checked out using a Guest Account. A customer had sent us a review and we couldn’t log into their account to insert the review. On checking the customer table in ZC I found that there is now a new flag COWOA_account, which shows if its a gust checkout or not. To have this information available on the ZC customers screen I installed the customers.php from the COWOA contribution, which has an extra field showing the account type used for checkout when editing the customer. In addition to see a bit of a summary on account usage in ZC index (main) page you’ll also need to copy index.php. So both files need to be copied to ZC-root/your-admin-folder>.

However having installed the files a few language defines are missing, so I copied this as well:

ZC-root/your-admin-folder>/includes/languages/english/extra_definitions/COWOA.php

Click the link be low to download the zip containing the two scripts to activate and deactivate a single day coupon. Copy the whole folder into your Zen-Cart root folder. After download there should be a new folder called cron that contains the two files. You will then need to create a cron job to run these scripts. See here for more details.

What I want to do is to have a coupon code that is only valid on a certain day of each week.

Cheap Thursday

10% of for placing an order on Thursdays
our slowest days are Thursday and Friday, idea being that more people might place their order on Thursday and these will then be dispatched Thursday and Friday to increase our activity levels on these days.

Tasks:

* Coupon code that only works on Thursdays
-> additional issue is that our server is in the US and we need to adjust for local Australian time
Solutions:
-> create coupon code: SAVETHURSDAY
-> set coupon_expire_date on Wednesday  22:00 to today + 2 days and than set the date to yesterday at Thursday 02:00 using a cron job. The cron job needs to be run at our local Australian times, the additional 2 hours are to adjust for Western Australia. Out of some reason wget doesn’t work on my host so I created two scripts, activate_coupon.php and deactivate_coupon.php. Both are the same however the action is set at the top of the file to either activate or deactivate the coupon.

OK so if you wan to do the same, these are the steps:

1. Create your coupon code with a start date of yesterday
2. Download the activate and deactivate scripts and upload to your server
   the scripts assume that they are in a folder (called cron by default however you can rename to any name) in your ZC root

3. Insert two cron jobs to activate and deactivate the coupon.
   Goto Cpanel > Cron Jobs >

If the above doesn’t work try php instead of /usr/bin/php. In any case be sure to insert you email address at the top under cron emails to ensure you receive an email until you’re certain that all is working. During testing I set the cron job to run every 5 minutes. To check all is good simply open the coupon in ZC and don’t forget to refresh the page.

After you’ve done this you might also want to put a page on your site to promote this coupon and blog about it.

* Display coupon code under cart if it’s Thursday to encourage checkout today.

After having installed Fast and Easy Checkout (FEC) and having fixed the layout of the login (tpl_login_default.php) and the checkout page the no account login fields are not formatted properly. I will upload a zip file soon that contains all the modified files for my install of FEC.  The issue is caused by a CSS definition. Open:

includes/templates/your-template/templates/css/no_account.css and find the 3rd or so line:

#billingField, #shippingField, #contactDetails, #checkoutButtons, #noAccountReferral, #noAccountDOB {
width: 47.5%;
}

and change the 47.5% to 75% and all is good.

Only a small issue however its good to reduce input as much as possible. So if you ship only to one country and you’re using Fast and Easy Checkout (FEC) from numic then this could be useful to you as well:

In the FEC code I saw that that the country field will not be displayed if there is only one country available to load during login.  SO seems the approach is to remove all countries from the DB except your own. So open your DB in phpmyAdmin > open table zen_countries and find your country’s id, than issue this SQL statement (backup your DB first).

DELETE from zen_countries WHERE countries_id <> your_ID;

Just did this for my store and yes country field no longer appears, this can also be handy even if you’re not using FEC if you only ship to one country then customers can’t enter a country you don’t ship to.
